In light of recent news stories regarding funding cuts affecting Welsh universities, Efa Gruffudd Jones, the Welsh Language Commissioner, has reminded them of their Welsh language responsibilities.
Efa said, "While we understand that the higher education sector is facing a challenging financial situation, leading to difficult decisions being taken, we are concerned about the impact of any decisions on educational opportunities for Welsh students, and on workplaces where the Welsh language is used.
"I will shortly publish a five-year strategic plan and my priorities include children and young people and developing workplaces where the Welsh language can be used naturally.
"Welsh universities play a key role in providing opportunities for young people to use Welsh beyond their home and school life and help in developing the workforce of the future in Wales.
"Institutions such as universities which are regulated under the Welsh Language Standards have specific responsibilities under the policy making standards. In line with those standards set under the Welsh Language (Wales) Bill 2011, universities are required to consider the impact of their decisions on the Welsh language, considering what steps could be taken to ensure that the decisions do not adversely affect the Welsh language, and that they contribute to promoting and normalising its use.
"As a result, I have written to Cardiff University asking them to set out how they have taken that into account when implementing the recent consultation on their proposed changes.
"I have also contacted the representative body, Universities Wales, to remind their members of their responsibilities and ask them to ensure that full consideration is given to the provision from a Welsh language perspective when making any decisions.”
