Increasing use of the Welsh language

The Welsh Government's Cymraeg 2050 strategy mentions the workplace as a key space for increasing the use of Welsh. The "workplace is said to be central to our daily lives and important in the linguistic development of individuals", as it is an opportunity for speakers at all levels to use and practice the language.  

To achieve the goal of enabling people to live their lives in Welsh, it is vital that all places of work in Wales make an effort to support and increase opportunities for workers to use Welsh. 

Our regulatory outcomes are a series of public transparent statements of what we intend to achieve through our work. One is that organisations are increasing the use of Welsh in their workplace, enabling staff to work in Welsh on a day-to-day basis. 

Welsh language standards require some organisations to produce policy on how they intend to increase, promote and facilitate the use of Welsh within the workplace.  

We are developing a number of model policies that organisations can use or modify. They will set clear commitments in the implementation of the relevant standards and lay the foundation to drive change in practices that will lead to greater use of the Welsh language.  

We understand that every organisation differs in their current use of Welsh, and their capacity for change into the future. Organisations are on a language continuum and the purpose of these resources is to help them move along that continuum. Organisation size, demographics and resources have been considered, to create useful and practical resources.  

When these are ready, it will be possible for an organisation to adopt the one that suits them best. Putting it into action should increase the use of Welsh within the workplace.
